FOOTBALL PROGRAM

FACES is using football to involve youth and young adults in HIV/AIDS prevention and care activities. The program taps into the excitement of football to capture the attention of young people in an environment where they feel comfortable exploring serious and sensitive issues. FACES is joining the Kicking AIDS Out! Network which is a peer-driven program that is currently engaging thousands of youth across the African continent.

FACES is bringing the HIV/AIDS education curriculum to HIV positive and HIV negative youth in Kisumu, Kenya.  An exciting complement to education on the field and in support groups is Extra Time, a youth peer education workbook developed by Sports For Life (SFL). SFL was supported in this endeavor by three leading public health and development institutions: Academy for Educational Development; Johns Hopkins University; and Grassroot Soccer Inc.  Extra Time will be an important catalyst for broad participation and engagement of young people and their communities in this important initiative.

Extra time is a youth peer education workbook on HIV/AIDS prevention and care for youth participants of FACES and the collaborating organizations that centers on four key messages: abstain, protect, teach and care. The content complements the Kicking AIDS Out! Network curriculum. By design, the product has the look and feel of a football/soccer magazine, building on the successes of Kicking AIDS Out! Network programs using soccer to convey critical health information, engage youth in activities and prompt them to share what they’ve learned with friends and family.  The workbook features many of the world’s top soccer stars imparting empowering messages about healthy lifestyles. Along with the athletes’ photos, the workbook features activities related to HIV/AIDS prevention that young people do at home, in class, and with their peers. This workbook will be a powerful long-term educational tool that FACES intends to circulate at their clinics and collaborating youth centers in Kisumu.
